10th Mountain Division veterans, descendants and loved ones, led by Jim Bray of the Northwest Chapter/National Association of the 10th Mountain Division, Inc., planted a Horse Chestnut tree Saturday in memory of WWII veteran Dick Johnson, who died on June 20 at the age of 89.
It was the newest addition to the 10th Mountain Division Memorial Grove, which has 73 trees representing 41 species. It was conceived in 1993 by Bray as a memorial for WWII veterans, mostly from the 10th Mountain Division who fought in Italy. They were trained to fight on skis. It is located at milepost 54 on eastbound Hwy 26, near the North Plains truck weigh station. http://www.oregonlive.com/hillsboro/index.ssf/2012/07/wwii_veterans_of_10th_mountain.html |
